ATI Catalyst 9.9 Scaling Options for HDMI

Post Description: With the new ATI Catalyst Control Center 9.9, I noticed that some options are very hard to find. In this quick guide I will show you how to set the scaling options for HDMI so that you can watch your HDMI in full screen.

Full Screen with HDMI cable

This blog came about because I was having trouble getting that 100% full screen with my HDMI cable connected to my 1080p monitor. When I connected my HDMI cable the screen was being centered on the monitor and not taking full advantage of the screen

The Fix: It is actually quite easy to fix this problem and get your full screen with the HDMI cable. All you need to do is adjust the over and underscan options within your ATI Catalyst center (also known as the Scaling Options).

ATI Catalyst Control Center 9.9 Overcan and Underscan Options

Surprisingly, the over and under scan (scaling options) are quite buried in the new ATI Catalyst Control Center. But if you know where to look the scaling options are really easy to get to…

To get to the ati scaling options do the following:

  1. Right click on the Desktop and open Catalyst Control Center 9.9
  2. Switch to Advanced mode if you are not there already
  3. Click dropdown menu Graphics in the top right
  4. Select Desktops and Displays
  5. Right Click your currently activated display under ‘Please Select a Display’ on the bottom right
  6. Select Configure
  7. Click on the Scaling Options tab  and your there
  8. Now, just move the scale to the right (overscan) until you get full screen (in my case that was 0%)

Check out the pictures on how to get to the Scaling options in ATI Catalyst Control Center 9.9

This process should work in windows vista as well as windows 7. I am currently using my HDMI cable on windows 7 RC with 0% underscan and with an HD4890 FX graphics card…and it looks beautiful!

I hope this post helped!

great post but does not work when you use a DVI to HDMI cable like i am.
atm i am stuck as my panasonic fullHD plasma is being seen as an LCD and i’m not getting anything at all when i go to ‘configure’
    any help very much welcome.

Thanks AJ. I searched and searched and couldn’t find the underscan correction. I thought AMD had removed it, and that it was time to move to NVIDIA. But no. AMD had hidden it!! I’ve become a bit of a htpc geek, and this kind of thing keeps me awake at night. Many thanks.

  3. admin says:

Yep, AMD did a good job at hiding the under-scan correction settings…I knew I wasn’t the only one that was having trouble finding them.

    Glad to help. Like always!

  4. Jack says:

Thank you so much for this post. I have no idea why they hid those settings but this solved my problem perfectly.

  5. chile says:

    Thanks so much

Was trying to figure out the underscan for 30 before I found this article.

  6. Louis CZ says:

Thanks a lot, I spend few hours trying to find it… :-)

    Hi,

i was so glad i found this post, but then i was shocked.
    At this point:
    # Right Click your currently activated display under ‘Please Select a Display’ on the bottom right
    # Select Configure

My CCC drops me to the welcome-page … no options to be made … known bug?

  8. Mark H says:

Yes, this all works fine within Windows but load up a game and you will have the same problem again and cannot get the game to play fullscreen. Going back into Windows whilst the game is loaded up you’ll find Windows is being displayed full-screen.

I am sure I am not the only one to have a problem when playing games in Windows 7.

  9. admin says:

Humm…weird. I works fine with all my games. I am using Windows 7 RC version (I get my free Windows 7 today though with my Party Pack :) ).

I wonder if it something else going…It should not change just because of a game.

What game are you trying to play?

  10. myname says:

    you are a hero

  11. Dan says:

THANK YOU!!! I had tried several other “fixes” and none of them worked. This one has so far.

  12. admin says:

I’m glad to help…It took me so long to figure out, I figured I might as well write a quick post on how to do it.

  13. alex says:

Holy crap!!!! I couldn’t find the “scaling” menu for the life of me… you’re my hero.

  14. Seidelin says:

Thanks you so much! How silly a place to hide important settings. Current NVidia drivers are a bit buggy for the htpc enthusiast in their current state, but so are ATI. Thats what you get after many years focus on games & 3D.

  15. Benc says:

Thanks! I was getting quite frustrated with this.

  16. jackie says:

THANK YOU!!! I’ve been at this for hours and this did the trick! Whew!

  17. admin says:

Looks like this post has helped quite a few people…I’m glad :)

I finally find out the solution. If u want to make change on the scaling option, first, set your screen resolution to low, like 800×600 or below. Then go to Desktop & Displays, click the small arrow beside the small computer, not the big one. Then now u can set the scaling option. After setting it, restore ur default resolution, then all the fullscreen scaling problem is solve now.

  19. admin says:

    Hey good find ninja!

  20. oMaT says:

Wow, I’ll join the crowd here with my thanks. Like others I was about to run back to NVIDIA until I ran across your post. Geez. Way to hide this stuff, ATI. Thank you again.

  21. Werner de Jong says:

I want ot thank you for this clear instruction. After 4 hours search on all ait website and numerous fora I discovered it had to do with overscaling. After another couple of minutes searching in ccc I found this article.

Using the screenshots fixed the problem within 30 seconds. Way to go AIT software developers. You have probably never heard of GUI design or GUI testing.

    Thanx again for your help.

  22. Tony says:

My god how hard was it to find that option, I have been looking ages to find it as my new monitor had this black border around it as you described. I have bookmarked this page for future reference, thanks for posting!

  23. Arron says:

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I searched for AGES trying to find this and I thought ATI/AMD had removed it and I was getting very frustrated and thought I’d wasted loads of money, but no. Thanks again!!!

  24. toombs says:

Many thanks to AJ for this great post! And to Ninjax’s additional note. Full screen is working – But, can anyone explain why I can’t make my new scaling settings permanent?
    Thanks in advance.

  25. Simon says:

When I try with driver version 9.11 it dumps me back to the welcome screen. In the process of rolling back to 9.9 (always useful to keep past versions).

Haven’t tried this yet though :-)

  27. Guy says:

I must give you a thank you it does work with v9.11 I was starting to see red, however I find I have to disable CCC right after I do it as it induces an instability in my system and that would be putting it mildly.

But the scaling stay even with out CCC running.

I really wish after all these years the programmers could figure out a decent interface.

  28. ATI-Never-Again says:

Catalyst Control Center is F**KING CRAP. Took ages to figure out it was an overscan issue – would have taken 3 minutes if the GODDAMN MENUS worked in their n00b POS software.

Every software ‘engineer’ working on CCC should go back to their previous job ‘engineering’ hamburgers at McDonalds, they’re so F**KING USELESS.

If I turned out a product with a flaw like that in my line of work, I’d be unemployed faster than you could say ATI SUCKS BALLS.

  29. admin says:

I agree. It is retarted what they did.

  30. admin says:

Sorry, this post was down for a bit…But it is back and live!!! Hope, it will help many more to come.

  31. Janis says:

    Thank You a lot!
I was unsuccesful even after reading Your post, until I accidentaly clicked the display in the bottom line :-)

  32. racingmustang says:

Thanks for that VALUABLE tip! I have been looking high and low for that darn underscan slider ever since I moved my PCI-E Radeon 4670 to a Windows 7 box. Darn ATI developers seem to have really gummed up the works on this GUI interface! THANKS AGAIN!!!

  33. very good information you write it very clean. I’m very lucky to get

    this info from you.

  34. Great article, thank you very much!

  35. These tips are so true

  36. mbt shoes says:

great share, great article, very usefull for me…thank you

  37. Nikolaj says:

    Hi,
Thanks – I spent 10 minutes looking for it before deciding to ask google.. I knew it was there so I could have easily spent an hour going through every possible settings page hehe..

  38. mr.freak says:

    @barth0

yeah, have the same problem, after pressing configure it drops me back to the welcome screen oO

  39. Mazen says:

I purchased a new HP laptop (1GB ATI), connected the HDMI, set ‘recommended’ resolution on my Asus VH232H and..black border with tiny window! I have never heard of ‘overscan/underscan’ before and never had this problem with any prior PC or monitor. THANK YOU for this post, it saved many people and is till so useful. This post reflects the best of what the internet means to me: sharing without boundaries or special interests. Thanks again.

  40. jatin says:

Thanks for your post with the screen shots. I was able to find the configure options in XP but missed right click on the bottom tab in win 7. Your post pointed me in the right direction.

  41. Matt says:

Worked like a charm, useful post, thanks.

  42. RARA says:

Now I reinstalld my win7 64bit. After first, installed catalyst 10-6. Desktop is OK after scaling, but when I run some fullscreen 3D, (Crysis, Assasins Creed) my picture is going back to the center of the panel. And my monitor says, it is in 1080i resolution. Why the Hell??? It’s a BenQ E2200HD minitor. No matter what I use, HDMI, or DVI. Tried with HDMI-HDMI, and DVI-HDMI cable.

  43. AJ says:

Resolution has nothing to do with the size of the screen. I am sure it is still 1080i even though it is centered on your screen. However, I haven’t had this happen to me before on my HD5870. Maybe it has something to do with your GPU?

  44. rammadis says:

many thanks for the guide :)

  45. Danil_Rus says:

    thanx a lot!
